The CYCA’s SOLAS Big Boat Challenge, one of Sydney’s most exciting sailing fixtures, has marked the start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart lead-up events for years.

In 2018, the Grinders Coffee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge will continue to showcase close and intense racing between the competing yachts whilst providing quality viewing of the world class boats from shores and vantage points all around the harbour.

Confirmed starters for the race include Black Jack, InfoTrack, Naval Group, Scallywag, Wild Oats X, Wild Oats XI and Winning Appliances.

The SOLAS Big Boat Challenge will be broadcast on CYCA channels tomorrow. Tuesday’s broadcast will feature commentary from sports legend Gordon Bray, sailing expert Peter Shipway and Olympic Silver Medallist Olivia Price.

The race will prove a great indicator as to who’s in fine form entering the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Competing yachts complete two laps of a course that starts off Point Piper, heads to Cannae Point near North Head, returns to Shark Island and goes back again. The finish line is off Fort Denison near the Opera House.

Since 2006 the CYCA has dedicated the event to raise awareness and funds for its SOLAS Trusts, which were established following the 1998 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race when six lives were lost.

Grinders Coffee Roasters has signed on as naming-rights sponsor. Managing Director of Grinders, Shane Richardson said, “The partnership is a perfect reflection of our commitment to make sure the Grinders Coffee brand continues to be known for quality, at the same time remaining true to the fifty-plus years of Australian heritage that we’re very proud of.

“From tomorrow’s prelude right through to Boxing Day and in Hobart as the fleet arrives, we’re really excited at the chance to work with CYCA to engage everyone from spectators to participants and bring a new premium coffee experience to the event.”

Speaking on behalf of CYCA, Commodore Paul Billingham said, “The Grinders Coffee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge is traditionally one of Australian sailing’s biggest days and most important events.”

“This partnership is going to be great for sailing fans around the world, with the event such an important indicator of who’s in the running to claim Line Honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.”
