French luxury expedition small ship company PONANT has, fittingly, announced its commitment to sponsor the 2018 PONANT Sydney to Noumea yacht race organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia – reinstating a Category 1 race that covers 1064 nautical miles, more than 400 nautical miles longer than the iconic Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Monique Ponfoort, Vice President PONANT Asia Pacific announced “Having a mid-year race of this calibre is perfect for serious sailors – they can focus on the competitive nature of the race through a range of challenging navigation and sea conditions including the Tasman and Coral Seas before arriving in sunny Noumea about five or six days after the start – the perfect escape from a cold Sydney winter!”

“We have signed up as sponsors because we feel a positive synergy between the CYCA and PONANT, the French owned and operated luxury cruise line and world leader in expedition cruising.

“This is the perfect link between sponsor and event. Of course the race ending in French Caledonia adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the occasion.

“PONANT’s Le Ponant, a classic three masted yacht, is the company’s first vessel and she represents the close ties that the Founder and CEO, Jean-Emmanuel Sauvée continues to have with sailing, and the embodied traditions maintained within the company’s ethos.”

Organised and conducted by the CYCA, with the co-operation of the Cercle Nautique Caledonien (CNC), the Category 1 race will start on Sydney Harbour on Saturday, 2 June 2018. The race is open to monohull yachts measuring between 9 and 30.48 metres.

20 entrants are already confirmed for the 2018 race. The existing race record set by Brindabella in 1991 will be under pressure from the more modern boats entered.

Useful information about the PONANT Sydney Noumea race including listing of current entrants and online registration is available on a dedicated CYCA website. During the race itself the website will have regularly updated news including special yacht trackers for positioning and video highlights.
