Historic clash

A fleet of 245 boats will compete in the historic Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race as the MacGlide Festival of Sails kicks off tomorrow.

A fleet of 245 boats is expected to sail the spectacular 32-nautical-mile Passage Race from Williamstown to Geelong, the curtain raiser to the 2020 MacGlide Festival of Sails.

Hosted by Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC), the three-day regatta is the largest keelboat regatta in the southern hemisphere. The MacGlide Festival of Sails will attract up to 300 boats to Geelong over the long weekend, with competitors coming from around the nation.

The Passage Race will Grand Prix racing yachts, cruiser/racer keelboats, multihulls, classic yachts and trailer sailers charge off two long lines for the large single start.

Tomorrow’s forecast is for north-westerly winds 10-15 knots becoming variable, below 10 knots in the afternoon.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the Geelong Waterfront this weekend as the Festival brings Steampacket Gardens, the RGYC and Eastern Beach to life.

 

Highlights will include live music, food stalls, arts and craft and hands-on experiences including Come and Try sailing and virtual sailing.

SATURDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 11.30pm-1pm – Stars Down Under Water Ski and Stunt Show (also at 7pm to 8pm) – off Steampacket Gardens
  • 12.15pm – Live music starts (Regatta Village, RGYC grounds). Highlights – Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine (12.15pm to 1.05pm and 1.40pm to 2.30pm); INXSIVE (9.30pm to 10.30pm and 11pm to midnight
  • 1pm – Live music starts Steampacket Gardens). Highlights – The Mik Maks (1pm to 2pm), Jael Wena (2.30pm to 3.15pm), Jack Vidgen (5.45pm to 7pm).
