The ClassGlobe 5.80, conceived by Don McIntyre and Polish sailor Janusz Maderski, was designed as an affordable solo racer for amateur construction.

With an overall length of 5.80 metres and a beam of 2.23 metres, an average speed of over 100 miles a day is expected for this yacht.

With keel, rudder and spars removed, everything fits easily inside a standard shipping container.

The ClassGlobe 5.80 can be towed legally on its own road trailer with keel attached. It can sail from anywhere and transport to or from any country with ease.

This offshore racing yacht features basic plywood epoxy construction, bow crash box and three watertight compartments.

The hull is covered with sustainable plantation 10-millimetre plywood. The hull is then laminated with epoxy and glass.

The main structure can be built by one or two people with little experience and basic tools in 550 hours, or a few months.

Capable of fast, efficient solo (or even two-handed) trans-ocean voyages, the new ClassGlobe 5.80 opens a new chapter in adventurous, affordable ocean racing.

McIntyre says, “The design is so pure, simple and wholesome. It is drawn by hand, not by a fluid dynamics program, or with finite stress analysis. The systems are basic for honest sailing; I like it a lot.”

Full construction plans are €300 including initial Class Registration.
