In a statement released today, the Double Bay Sailing Club has confirmed that the 50th-anniversary celebration for the Olympic one-person dinghy sailing class, scheduled for Sunday 30 May, has been postponed to next month.

Organisers of the event have cited the marine weather warnings issued for Sydney waters for this Sunday as the reason for the postponement as well as the current COVID-19 travel restrictions in Victoria.

At 11:59pm Thursday 27 May, the Victorian Government implemented a 7-day lockdown following a sudden wave of COVID-19 cases through the state’s capital.

Prior to the cancellation, the celebration was planned to occur in Sydney Harbour with an exhibition parade and intended to break world records with over 200 ILCA Laser dinghies.

Since the class was established in 1971, over 218,000 boats have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular sailing classes ever.

The celebration is still planned to go ahead in the future with an expected date set for 20 June 2021.
