Organisers of the Hamilton Island Race Week have announced that the 2021 event has been cancelled.

The update came on the evening of 5 August via the event’s official Facebook page.

The 2021 Hamilton Island Race Week was scheduled to commence on 21 August.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Hamilton Island Race Week 2021. We believe this is the right thing to do for the safety of the fleet, our island community and our guests,” the statement reads.

“We share in your disappointment, especially given Race Week 2021 was set to be a record year.”

“We will be sending more detailed information directly to our fleet tomorrow morning.”

“To our competitors around Australia and to our Race Week sponsors and partners, we thank you for your exceptional support and look forward to being in touch in the not too distant future, with information on Race Week 2022.”

While no official reason has been published, the decision comes less than three weeks after organisers announced a scaling down of the event following COVID-19 restrictions across Greater Sydney and Victoria.

Since 6 August, Victoria as well as parts of Queensland and New South Wales are under lockdown restrictions following an increase of locally acquired cases.

According to data provided by the Department of Health, as of 5 August, there are an estimated 3,933 active cases in Australia.

More on this story to come.
