The Race Committee of the Hamilton Island Race Week (HIRW), alongside the Hamilton Island Events Team, has confirmed that the 2021 edition will be scaled down.

The announcement, which was published on their website and emailed to this year’s entries, is said to arrive from the “continually evolving situation with interstate lockdowns,” and the belief “that border restrictions may extend for longer.”

The  2021 Race Week is still scheduled to commence on 21 August, with organisers confirming that the regatta is open for any boat that can enter Queensland.

However, the vast majority of the on-shore events have been cancelled.

“Whilst this is disappointing, we know that many of our fleet are well underway with their plans and need to know information like this now,” reads a public statement on the official HIRW website.

“We will continue to monitor the Queensland Health Advice and update this page as new information comes to hand.”

Earlier this week, both NSW and Victoria premiers, Gladys Berejiklian and Dan Andrews, announced new lockdown measures to address the growing COVID-19 outbreak in both states.

According to the Department of Health, it’s estimated that there are currently 979 active cases in Australia.
