Nick Dowling is now Group CEO of Balmoral and CEO of Hamilton Island. He has overseen the Oatley family office Balmoral Australia since 2018.

Nick’s passion is driving and supporting the long-term development of the Group’s people, businesses and investments. At Hamilton Island, Nick has overseen the recent opening of the luxury boutique hotel The Sundays, and the partnership with Josh & Julie Niland that has brought to life the successful Catseye Pool Club.

He has also been working with the team to refresh Hamilton Island’s broader food and beverage offerings, such as The Palms garden bar and coca chu Southeast Asian.

New activities that showcase Hamilton Island’s picturesque tropical backdrop, including Mountain Biking and Golf are yet another facet of his remit.

Next up, the team will be leading a contemporary reinvention of Hamilton Island’s main Resort Centre, bringing a fresh modern vibe to beautiful Catseye Beach by the end of 2025.

In his down time, Nick competes in endurance events like the Hamilton Island triathlon and to get out around the island’s trails.

Here, Nick Dowling shares with Sails his views on Hamilton Island and the importance of Race Week in the island’s offering as it shapes up to celebrate the 40th edition.

Your ties with Hamilton Island are deep. What makes it such a special place?

Hamilton Island has a rare kind of magic. It’s not just the natural beauty, although being in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and gateway to iconic destinations like Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef do make it Australia’s most spectacular tropical island.

Importantly, it’s our people who make it special. For many of our team the island isn’t just where they work, it’s home, and that connection brings a warmth and authenticity to everything we do.

We aspire to ensure warm, friendly Australian hospitality runs through every experience, whether it’s a long lunch with friends, an energetic moment exploring trails around the island, or a day out on the reef.  And there’s always something to look forward to.

Our calendar of world-class events is a highlight, with signature moments like Race Week, the Hamilton Island Triathlon, and the Great Whitehaven Beach Run drawing regulars and newcomers every year. There’s a real sense of connection and community here, and that’s what keeps people coming back.

When did you take the helm as CEO?

I’ve overseen the Oatley family office, Balmoral Australia, since 2018, and stepped into the role of Group CEO of Balmoral and CEO of Hamilton Island in 2024. It’s a genuine privilege to help shape the future of a place as loved and iconic as Hamilton Island.

Since taking my role, our team has been working closely with the Oatley family and our Board to evolve and add to the island in ways that matter—while staying true to our legacy and spirit.

What are the main priorities and objectives for 2025 and beyond?

Our focus is delivering world-class hospitality in every element of the Hamilton Island experience and progressively evolving and adding in ways that meet the expectations of today’s visitors.

In April 2025 we opened our new boutique hotel The Sundays, with Josh and Julie Niland at the helm of its signature restaurant, Catseye Pool Club. And we’ve got a number of exciting projects under way over the next year– across accommodation, dining and activities.  This includes a revamp of the main Resort Centre on Catseye Beach, which will bring vibrant new spaces to eat, shop, and unwind, plus a focus on existing activities like golf, and new activities like e-mountain biking.

This is all part of a broader plan to build on the island’s incredible diversity – constantly refreshing, improving, and adding to what is already a very special place to escape, sail, and explore.

How do you promote Hamilton Island locally and internationally?

Hamilton Island is known and loved by many Australians, and our place at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef makes us a “must” for international visitors.  Our combination of natural beauty and world-class experiences brings many guests back regularly, and our focus on evolving and adding to the island is a drawcard for new guests.

In the past year, in addition to The Sundays and Catseye Pool Club, we have introduced new venues like The Palms garden bar, we refreshed our beloved South East Asian diner coca chu, and we added to experiences—from scenic seaplane flights and on-water adventures to immersive cultural additions like the Island Discovery tour with Robbie Congoo. We are also progressively upgrading our health and wellness offerings and adding new experiences like e-mountain biking from August.

People talk about those experiences, and that’s what brings others to the island. We have guests who first holidayed here as kids, now bringing their grandkids.

It’s a testament to the Oatley family’s long-term investment over the past two decades, and to how we’ve evolved alongside our guests.

HIRW is celebrating 40 years this year. What can competitors and visitors expect in terms of new attractions, facilities, programs and accommodation options?

Race Week 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet. The on-water action will be as competitive as ever—but in our 40th year we’re going to really pull out the stops.

Guests can expect an incredible line-up of social events—from lunches and starlit dinners with chefs like Josh Niland and Alanna Sapwell-Stone, to beachfront garden parties and the ultimate lay day beach party at Whitehaven Beach aboard Superyacht Impulsive.

We will also have all the fun of Front Street with live music and food pop-ups, plus we’re planning something new and special on the water, an exhibition sailing match with more to be revealed soon. Watch this space!

Race Week 2025 welcomes exciting new partners, including American Express, Panerai and Balter, alongside existing partners Mecca Cosmetica, Piper-Heidsieck, Tanqueray, Casamigos, Revo, Robert Oatley Wines, Sail Racing, Tourism and Events Queensland and longstanding partner Nautilus Marine Insurance. These partners help elevate the Race Week experience to new heights. Whether you’re racing, relaxing, or revelling – this year will be memorable.

For those staying on, we’ve introduced Race Week packages at qualia and The Sundays. We’re also offering special Race Week accommodation rates for sailors, from hotels to holiday homes, making it easier for all guests to be part of the celebration.

We are also hoping this milestone year inspires a new generation of young sailors to discover the thrill, camaraderie and joy of the sport.

Will you be sailing/competing or attending events during Race Week?

I wouldn’t miss any of it! Race Week is one of the most dynamic weeks on the island’s calendar.  While I’m aiming to get out on the water, I’ll also be in the thick of it onshore, cheering on the crews, welcoming guests and celebrating the line-up of events and experiences. The buzz on island during Race Week is hard to beat.

What is the allure of Race Week? Why is it such a highlight of the sailing calendar for so many people?

What began as a small offshore regatta in 1984 has become so much more.  It’s now a celebration of one of the most picturesque locations on the planet, world-class competitive sailing, incredible social events, and a welcoming and relaxed island atmosphere.

For the 40th anniversary, guests can look forward to Champagne cruises, beachfront garden parties, wine masterclasses, starlit dinners, and some of the country’s most exciting chefs hosting unforgettable events.

It’s a week that brings together everything Hamilton Island does best, with the warm Coral Sea as your backdrop and the Great Barrier Reef at your doorstep. There’s nothing quite like it.
