SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week is on track to make a return to the sailing calendar next month, with Townsville Yacht Club (TYC) and its organising committee looking forward to hosting this event.

As expected with the current surge of the Delta strain, only 68 boats of the original 80 plus will enter the competition, scheduled to commence 2 September.

“We feel fortunate to be able to hold SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week after cancelling last year due to COVID and the associated lockdowns,” said TYC Vice Commodore and Event Chairman Mike Steel.

“Unfortunately, COVID persists, and we commiserate with those who were entered but can no longer join us because of current lockdown restrictions.

“We know the effort that boat owners, their crews, family and friends make to travel up here and support Race Week. We hope you put your hands up again next year and we look forward to welcoming you then.”

Organisers have stated that some interstate entrants have arrived before the wave of lockdowns across Australia, seeing a small but reliable contingency of Victorian, Tasmanian, South Australian New South Welsh boats. However, due to border restrictions, several entries are short on crew members.

But while COVID-19 is comparatively nowhere near as prevalent in Queensland as currently in New South Wales and Victoria, preparations are still being made to ensure safety.

“All social activities are going ahead as scheduled,” said Steel, “but we will operate under the COVID-safe plan and ensure we do everything possible to keep the community safe.”
