Yachts, dinghies and Windsurfers aplenty will be found at the Sail Port Stephens regatta this year, with the event celebrating its 15th anniversary. The regatta, which takes place between 4 and 10 April, will be the largest yet.

At the close of entries, 119 yachts had entered the Bannisters Port Stephens Commodores Cup series alone, while around 130 will line up for weekend racing. These numbers are before counting Tasar, Finns, Windsurfers and other off-the-beach classes.

Principal race officer Denis Thompson has more than a dozen scenic inshore and offshore courses planned for the week-long regatta, providing competitors with an array of conditions and scenery.

The Bannisters Port Stephens Commodores Cup is one such course. It’s cruiser-racer heaven for yachts large and small.

The Port Stephens Trophy series for performance cruising and racing yachts is set to follow, after a layday on 7 April. This division alone has almost 90 entries. Competitors can also look forward to the Yachting NSW Championships, which has 17 starters, and the Fareast 28R nationals.

What’s more, Bay Sailing Centre at Soldiers Point will host the 2022 Tasar NSW Championships, along with Finn dinghies and Windsurfers. The off-the-beach component, only in its second year of running, is already building momentum too.

Pre-event satellite regattas have also been planned. The RS Aero Class Intergalactic Championships will take place from 2 to 3 April, while the nationals for the Australian Sports Boat Association take place on 26 to 29 May with Port Stephens Yacht Squadron.

For those who prefer to stay dry, there are plenty of social events on land. A Monday night welcome party, supported by Windcraft Yachts, will be followed by a disco-themed ball for the Commodores Cup presentation evening.

Thursday’s layday allows crews a day of rest, in which they can attend a Making Waves fundraising lunch. Other post-racing events will be held on Friday and Saturday, such as d’Albora Marina Nelson Bay’s TrySailing for kids aged six to 12.

The Sails Port Stephens regatta offers a wide range of courses on clean and protected waters, making it one of Australia’s best racing tracks.
