Olympic gold medallist and Australian Sailing Hall of Fame inductee James “Dick” Sargeant OAM headlines a distinguished group of sailing community members recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours.

Sargeant was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for Service to Sailing, recognising a remarkable lifetime in the sport that includes Olympic Gold in the 5.5 Metre class at Tokyo 1964, two America’s Cup campaigns, multiple Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races, a Barranjoey Pin (Pin #28) and decades of volunteer service to sailing.

He was joined on the honours list by Associate Professor David Austin AM of Keppel Bay Sailing Club, recognised for his significant contribution to safety and medicine in sailing. David is a current member of Australian Sailing’s National Safety Committee.

Others recognised include Geoffrey Fader AM (Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania), for his longstanding support of Junior and Sabot sailing in Tasmania, Robert Kucera AM, former Commodore of Fremantle Sailing Club, Graeme Foale OAM (Lindisfarne Sailing Club and Bellerive Yacht Club), for more than four decades of volunteer service to sailing and maritime events in Tasmania, and Cornelis Steenland OAM, honoured for his service to youth and sailing through his work on the iconic sail-training ship South Passage.

Australian Sailing CEO Malcolm Page OAM congratulated the recipients and acknowledged their collective contribution to the sport.

“These honours recognise the incredible depth of commitment that exists throughout our sailing community, from the grass roots to international sailing” Page said.

Each recipient has made a lasting impact through their dedication as competitors, volunteers, administrators, mentors and leaders. Australian Sailing congratulates them all on this well-deserved recognition.”

Australian Sailing also recognises and congratulates Mrs Elisabeth Janet Calvert-Jones AC on being awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia for her eminent service to philanthropy, to the arts, to medical research organisations, to the community, and to children and youth.

Mrs Calvert-Jones is the wife of John Calvert-Jones AM who founded the highly successful Australian Sailing Team Patrons Program.

The 2026 honours highlight the many ways individuals contribute to sailing, from elite competition and offshore safety to youth development, club leadership and volunteer service, helping ensure the continued strength of the sport across Australia.
