In the lead up to the Northern Hemisphere summer season, Australia-based water sports apparel company Zhik has released a new range of UV-protective shirts purposefully designed for on-boat activity.

Named the UVActive range, these shirts are available either long and short sleeved and feature a fine gauge, soft interlocked weave fabric that provides increased durability, snag resistance, moisture wicking, breathability and is antistatic.

The UVActive fabric additionally blocks out 99.5 percent of both UVA and UVB rays regardless of being dry or wet.

These results are measured under the US’ Test Method for Transmittance or Blocking of Erythemally Weighted Ultraviolet Radiation through Fabrics (AATCC-183-2004) standards and the Australia/New Zealand standard for sun protective clothing (AS/NZS-4399:201).

“The importance of protecting your skin from harmful UV, even in cloudy conditions, is well understood in the Southern Hemisphere, reads a press release provided by Zhik, adding. “Yet less so in the Northern Hemisphere.”

Both the long and short sleeve varieties are available in traditional men and women’s sizes are retail for US$44.99 (AU$74.95) and US$39.99 (AU$69.95) respectively.

Founded in 2004, Zhik is a global leader in yachting performance apparel. Based in Australia, the brand is the official supplier to the Australian, New Zealand, Danish and Singaporean sailing teams.
