As the 2021 sailing season reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, a fresh outlook has been afforded to the Melges IC37.

Designed by Mark Mills, the roughly 11-metre racer lands at the point of being a modern racer, capable of entering in or offshore competition, but also a vessel with contemporary styling.

Following the relaxation of class rules, the Melges IC37 can now step into its stride, offering owners greater freedoms from crew makeup to the fettling of onboard systems – an appealing option for any boat of this size.

Previously, aside from the double-handed arena, few options existed for a fun, fast boat that can be raced competitively under IRC regulations with the option of entering a Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) offshore regatta. But given its size and performance, the Melges IC37 is defined by this capability.

“As the sailing fraternity finally awakes from the depth of COVID-19 hibernation, the yacht racing future looks bright in both the short and long term,” says Sam Pearson, a Race Boat Broker with Ancasta Race Boats.

“Owners and crews have all taken stock whilst away from their racing campaigns and are now looking for a yacht that is not only exciting to sail but cost-effective and very competitive under IRC. The Melges IC37 fits the bill perfectly.”

Rear Commodore of Yachting at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Robert Bicket, is a prime example of an experienced sailor knowing just how much the Melges IC37 has to offer, having competed on his new Fargo at the IRC nationals, the first competition he’s raced with it.

With Fargo joining Ian Atkins’ ICY, the season is now underway with two Melges IC37s campaigning in the Solent, made up of crews of both young and old sailors, defining how this model can cater for a broad market.
