With Wing Foiling joining the 2027 World Sailing Championships, Australian Sailing brought emerging athletes and coaches together for a development camp in Townsville.

Australian Sailing’s High Performance Pathway Program hosted a four-day Wing Foiling Camp at Townsville Sailing Club earlier this month, providing athletes and coaches with valuable training as the fast-growing discipline moves closer to the international spotlight.
The camp brought together 10 wing foilers from Townsville, Yeppoon, Sydney and Brisbane, alongside three coaches who participated not only to support the athletes but also to build expertise in one of sailing’s newest high-performance classes.
Designed to identify emerging talent and strengthen Australia’s pathway, the camp also aimed to ensure both athletes and coaches remain at the forefront of the rapidly evolving discipline. It provided a valuable winter training opportunity for sailors outside the major high-performance centres while helping local coaches establish the foundations for future foiling programs within their clubs.

Consistent breezes throughout the four days delivered ideal conditions, allowing one or two on-water sessions each day. Morning classroom sessions focused on race rules, racecourse analysis and individual racing strategies before athletes headed onto the water to apply those lessons.
Training emphasised manoeuvres under pressure, starting techniques and tactical decision-making through a series of race simulations, giving athletes the opportunity to refine both their technical skills and racing awareness.
Sailors returning from recent international competition were joined by a new wave of developing wing foilers, producing close, tactical racing that created a strong learning environment across the fleet.
The camp reflects Australian Sailing’s growing investment in Wing Foiling following its inclusion as an invited class at the 2027 World Sailing Championships. The governing body plans to continue expanding development opportunities while reviewing its selection guidelines for the championships to formally incorporate the discipline.
The championships are expected to provide an important benchmark for assessing Australia’s emerging Wing Foiling talent as the class continues its rapid international growth.
