Contest Yachts have completed the technical launch of the 15-metre judel/vrolijk & co-drawn Contest 49CS.

It’s the yard’s first aft cockpit, twin aft cabin sailing yacht in the 50-foot range, introducing a completely new interior style.

Contest have a rich history at this size of centre cockpit yachts and are nearing completion of the all-new Contest 50CS as well. The 49CS and 50CS will also be offered with optional all-electric propulsion.

Both models will premiere at the Düsseldorf Boat Show from 21 to 29 January 2023, following a preview of the Contest 49CS at Hiswa te Water in-water Boat Show in the Netherlands, from 31 August to 4 September 2022.

Selected media will also be invited to test-sail the Contest 49CS from Medemblik in October.

The 49CS offers something new, different and reassuringly consistent with Contest credentials. It’s a new step in the Contest range for sailors preferring their master suite forward and family or guest cabins in the back.

There’s also an impressive tender garage, spacious aft deck and loads of storage throughout the cabins, which enjoy the latest design-styling from Wetzels Brown Partners studio.

With judel/vrolijk & co’s balance of modern topside height and max beam aft, Contest have achieved a twin aft cabin plan with extra headroom throughout, and the option of doubles or twin berths with walkway between.

The space, lightness and features of the forward owner’s suite and new extra-width saloon offers a freshness and sea-practical sophistication.

Yet, in this new configuration, Contest have also retained significant and advantageous features of the long-favoured and famed centre cockpit arrangements, such as the renowned double-sided longitudinal galley. There are options in final layout and plan.

Both Contest yachts also have full Lloyd’s Register certification. Lloyd’s Register is also involved in the company’s move to all-electric propulsion as an option. Technology is now being developed with Torqeedo and BMW for first integration into a Contest 50CS, set to launch in 2024.

It’s a clever system, all electric, with solar and in-water regenerating capabilities. For silent operation underway and at anchor, the system is a combination of 50 kW Torqeedo Deep Blue 50 and super robust 42 kWh BMWi3 battery packs.

Regeneration from the propeller is backed by integrated Watt&Sea hydro-generators and Solbian solar panels.

Extending range to bluewater cruising capabilities, a powerful genset with 400-litre diesel feed creates electricity fed into the battery bank, sufficient to equal and even go beyond conventional diesel drivetrains.

The first all-electric Contest 50CS is set to launch in 2024. In the meantime, enjoy a sneak peek of the first Contest 49CS at the 2022 Hiswa te Water, and both the 49CS and 50CS together at Boot Düsseldorf 2023.
